Key terms for this guide

These glossary pages cover the ideas and platform language most closely tied to this workflow.

Treat the pattern as context

An inside bar shows temporary compression. It does not tell you whether the next expansion should be faded, followed, or ignored without broader chart context.

  • Compression only becomes interesting when it happens somewhere meaningful.
  • An inside bar at a key level carries a different message than one in the middle of nowhere.
  • This is why pattern markers should rarely stand alone.

Session and timeframe change the meaning

Inside bars can be common and noisy on some intraday charts, but more meaningful on others. Review the pattern frequency before giving it too much weight.

Good markers stay simple

A useful inside bar indicator should make the condition obvious, avoid clutter, and let the trader decide how it fits with levels, volume, or trend state.

  • The best pattern tools highlight the event without hijacking the chart.
  • If the tool becomes the whole workflow, it is probably doing too much.
  • Simple markers leave room for the trader's own context.
